Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and fellow Democratic leaders held a press conference earlier this week to slam President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. But it did not take long before things got a little awkward. In the video above Schumer spends the first few minutes ranting about Kavanaugh and Trump before taking questions.
And Chuck Schumer was not ready.
The first question was, “What about the fact that Harry Reid is the one who started the nuclear option, so now you’re faced with the nuclear option instead of the 60-vote [option]?”
Democrats have no one to blame but themselves for the judicial confirmation process. Former Democratic leader Harry Reid killed the filibuster for judicial nominees. And now they’re paying the price. They set the precedent and so it was politically easier for Sen. Mitch McConnell to kill the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees. Also, if Schumer had not been so forcefully opposed to Trump’s first pick, Judge Neil Gorsuch, then they might have had more capital to fight Kavanaugh.
Schumer completely flubbed this question blaming McConnell for Harry Reid’s move to kill the filibuster saying, ”Mitch McConnell blocked judge after judge after judge on the courts. Then, leader Reid had no choice. When we passed the law, we said Supreme Court should be different,” Schumer said. “Then Mitch McConnell changed that. And then to boot, he wouldn’t let Merrick Garland have a hearing. Mitch McConnell has had as his goal to create a hard right Supreme Court and nothing has stopped him.”
McConnell even warned Democrats when they killed the filibuster saying, “You’ll regret this, and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think.”
